I am no longer outside of Mindy’s car, but I am not inside of it either. There is a door that is closed behind me, but the plastic handle has been replaced with a metal one. The black car door is replaced by a large, heavy mass of wood that slides on rollers at the top. The door is locked from the outside with a hefty padlock. I cannot see it, but yet I know it to be true, because I immediately know where I am. I am standing inside of an old horse barn – my barn – the one that Flash had felt such a connection with.

There is a long corridor outstretched before me that runs the entire sixty-foot length of the barn. Four empty horse stalls mark the concrete walkway; two on my left and two on my right. The stalls are closed up and locked, but I immediately notice that the usual stall doors – the ones that look as if they belong in an old western – have been replaced with black, cast iron gates. Each gate is identical to the gate out on the property; the gate that has captivated my every waken thought.

Just beyond the stalls are two more doors. The one on the left leads up to the top level of the barn, where all of my writings and office supplies have been stored. The other door is the massive kind that opens and closes on rollers, identical to the one locked directly behind me. That door bookends the opposite side of the structure and opens out into the front parking area. I long to run through it, but I know that it too is locked. The dream world has trapped me inside the barn – but why?

The darkness of night festoons the walls and floors of the old barn, accented by a glimmer of moonlight that spills in through the windows of each stall like the tendrils of a silver vine. The air inside the barn is frigid, causing a barrage of pins and needles to bite at my skin. Each exasperated breath I take evolves into a small tuft of mist as it hits the coldness of the air. My heartbeat quickens as my feet slow their pace. Fear dances in the deserted streets of my mind like nightmares on parade. That is when I first hear the pathetic sounding voice as it cries out into the dark.

“Stop it, Phillip! You’re hurting me!”

I pause.

Frozen.

I take in a cold lungful of air at the sound of the all-too familiar voice. The woman’s hopeless plea sends my body into a convulsion of shivers. A loud WHACK stamps the night inside the first stall. It is followed by a helpless yelp of pain. A lifetime of fear overtakes me, but as I drawl near to the first of the four black gates, I am able to see who is caged within the stall, transforming the thoughts in my mind into a foreboding reality.
